This has been a lot of fun and unlike anything I have done until now in terms of outreach. Please click and dive into the pages of this comic book, designed by Sabrina Sanchez, which will lead you to the Sahara desert, planet Mars, and the interior of rocks. You will learn what a double-edged sword magnetism can be, giving rise to billion years old records that can allow us to unravel the geological history of planets, while being able to instantly erase the very same records. Feel free to share! And if you are coming to EGU24, please join the session “EOS1.3 – Exploring the Art-Science Interface” to hear more about it!
In September 2021 I gave two online talks at the Aegean science festival, part of the European Researchers’ Night. They are both available on YouTube.
Geared towards children:
Why does the compass function on Earth but not on Mars or on the Moon? (in greek, 1:09:45-1:42:22)
Geared towards adults:
Planetary magnetic fields: what are they, how do we study them and why? (in greek, 1:50:50-2:24:03).
In the context of LINK-12, (Let’s INvest in K-12), an outreach initiative that I co-founded at the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, MIT, I gave in March 2021 an online presentation to 1st grade elementary school students of the Frances Drake Elementary School, Leominster, MA, USA. This is a photo I took of some of the paintings they sent me to thank me for my presentation. It so happened that I received it on a day I was thinking to abandon research because “nothing works and it is too hard”. Their gift changed my mind.
I spoke at the International Soapbox Science Festival, Berlin, Germany. My talk was entitled “The magnetic song of rocks: from the bottom of the oceans to outer space”. This festival invites women scientists to talk about their research in public, open-air spaces.
In 2018 and 2019 I spoke at the “Women in Science and Tech Day” of the elementary school Platanus Schule, Berlin, Germany.
I participated several years as a member of the Geomagnetism Group Booth at Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften, GFZ, Potsdam, Germany. This is a science festival, where GFZ scientists present their work to the public.
